In July, 2005 a cover story in Consumer Reports proclaimed, "Probiotics: If they're not in your diet, they should be."

Probiotics are powerful health-promoting and life-extending microbes. They reside within each of us, and are also found in many foods and nutritional supplements. Because of their remarkable benefits and safety, probiotics have become the focus of intense scientific interest at major medical schools around the world.

New findings are emerging so fast that even most doctors haven't been able to keep up. In The Probiotics Revolution, one of the most prominent researchers in the field - whose work has been featured in Newsweek, Forbes, and BBC News - presents an up-to-the-minute, highly accessible guide. The book details breakthrough discoveries to

  • Improve overall health
  • Enhance immune function
  • Curb inflammation
  • Fight chronic bowel diseases
  • Prevent and relieve allergies and asthma
  • Counter antibiotic side effects
  • Eliminate yeast infections
  • Plus new evidence that probiotics may help fight cardiovascular disease, cancer, autoimmune diseases, chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia - and even obesity.

The Probiotics Revolution also offers comprehensive step-by-step guidance on including probiotic foods and supplements in your lifestyle.

  • Instructions for making probiotic-rich foods part of a healthy diet
  • Unbiased advice on choosing the best probiotic supplements
  • Using probiotics safely and effectively, from birth to old age

Gary Huffnagle is a professor of Internal Medicine, Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Michigan Medical Center, one of the top ten medical schools in the country. His research about the immune system, inflammation, and the microbes that live inside us has made headlines worldwide. This work is supported by major grants from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), including a five-year $1.8 million dollar grant from the NIH to further study the connection between digestive tract microbes and susceptibility to allergies. He holds a B. S. in microbiology from the Pennsylvania State University and a Ph. D. in immunology from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School.
